Very gradually, my father got better. He spent three weeks in the ICU and one week more in a hospital room. We were advised that one of us should always be present, but this piece of advice didn’t seem to be equally relevant for all the members of the family, so at the end only a few of us stayed there by night. The longest period of time I was there was from one Monday at 11 a.m. to Tuesday at 6 p.m. I slept around four hours and helped my father in everything he needed. Four days later he was dismissed and could go back home, where to this day he is still slowly recovering.
I have been absent during this last month. My life has been paralyzed. Family issues have required my full attention. My father was hospitalized and underwent a quite complicated emergency surgery. That surgery was followed by three days in drug-induced coma, during which all the family held our breath, aware that my father’s life hang by a thread. I knew everything depended on him: his will to live, the existence of unfinished tasks, whether or not it was the moment… My routine was totally altered and I had to move to my mother’s house, to be with her, pay the two daily visits to the hospital’s intensive care unit, and do the necessary shopping, as she can’t drive. Three of my uncles and aunts came from another province and I also had to drive them around. One of my brothers relieved me one weekend so I could return home, rest and do my own housework.
